Woman Struck, Seriously Injured By Vehicle In Jersey City

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A woman was left with life-threatening injuries late Monday when she was struck by a vehicle that jumped the curb in Jersey City.

The vehicle was headed west on Union Street near Martin Luther King Drive early Monday evening when it jumped the curb and hit the woman, Jersey City police said.

The vehicle also knocked down a light pole, police said.

The woman was left with serious life-threatening injuries and was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health in Jersey City, police said. The driver, a woman, was also taken to the same hospital, police said.

The victim's aunt told 1010 WINS' Al Jones that she believes the incident was premeditated.

"It was a fight that unfolded, and after the fight the young lady got into her vehicle, and once she got into her vehicle she began to accelerate her car and run into the victim and drag the victim from the middle of the street until the gate where her car was stopped at," Joanne Umeh said.

Umeh said she had no idea what the fight was about.

"My reaction was why? That was my reaction, like, why would it prompt you to run her over with a vehicle?" she said, "Why would you get inside a car when you had time to think about it?"

She said she had never discussed the woman with her niece before.

The investigation continued late Monday.
