Cops Seek Leads In Death Of Man Found Brutally Murdered In Canarsie's Bayview Houses
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A mother's grief was on display in Brooklyn as a family begged for help in finding her son's killer.
Amani Miller, 23, vanished from his usual routine two weeks ago. He had a job delivering construction equipment and would make a daily call to his mother. He was found face down in the stairwell of Canarsie's Bayview Houses around 2:30 p.m. Monday, March 14.
"They took me to the station and they told me he was dead. They told me he was all gone, and all I could do was scream," Miller's mother Allison Shinn told CBS2's Lou Young.
Police are familiar with the place where violent crime is not uncommon. Amani's killing was especially brutal. He was cut a lot, seemingly tortured before being shot, and his badly broken body was thrown down a flight of stairs. It almost seemed personal.
"We have no idea why he was in that place. I'm not trying to be critical of anyone's living situation, but he had no business there," Amani's grandmother Pamela Williams said.
CBS2 has been told that the young man from Bedford-Stuyvesant had a clean record. The housing project where he was found is a long way from his usual haunts.
Amani's murder was the latest in a series of shootings.
"We believe these young men are being lured there. We don't know by whom, we assume it might be some young ladies. This is what we're hearing," community activist Tony Herbert said.
Police said Miller's wallet was missing. They released security video of a black Town Car that the killers may have ridden in, and are hoping the driver will lead them to the suspects.
