Family Terrified When Stray Bullet Flies Into Larchmont Home

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Westchester family went through a frightening ordeal when a stray bullet crashed through their window and shattered glasses at their bar.

As CBS2's Lou Young reported, a purple Lexus was hit from behind as it sat parked in a condo complex just blocks from the center of Larchmont.

A stray bullet veered off into a cluster of expensive homes, and through one of them.

"The bullet came through with enough power to do damage," one family member said.

The family was home after 10 p.m. when the liquor cabinet seemed to explode.

"I was watching the TV. The first thing I heard was the impact. The glass broken," a witness recalled.

Then they saw the hole in the front of the house and heard additional shots.

Residents at the Carlton House Condo Complex where the Lexus was parked began calling 911.

Suspects were seen running to a waiting car. Things like this just don't happen here.

"Shocking, shocking. I've been living here for 25 years and we never heard shots in Larchmont," Vera Noy said.

The car, it turns out, is owned by Lynda Lamont, a local blogger who goes by Lynda Larchmont. Police would not say if she was the target or if her car was hit by accident.

The incident has pierced the community's sense of security.

"My children were both at home in the bedroom," a homeowner said, "I'm afraid to be in my own house."

Witnesses heard four shots, but Mamaroneck Town Police who are handling the investigation only found three bullets. They searched a drainage area just north of the parking lot for evidence, but won't speculate on why the shooter or shooters were here or what may have been the reason for the gunfire.
