ELKHORN, Wis. (CBSNewYork) — Students at a Wisconsin high school girls’ soccer game will be disciplined for yelling at Latina players, “Donald Trump, build that wall.”
CBS Madison affiliate WISC-TV reported the Elkhorn students chanted the racial slurs at the players from Beloit Memorial Thursday night.
Elkhorn District Administrator Jason Tadlock said in a statement that three elementary-aged students who were sitting near Beloit fans said, “Trump, build a wall,” and that two high school students shouted back-and-forth “Trump” four to five times.
Beloit coach Brian Denu told WISC he had to console his players during and after the game.
“I could just see the hurt and pain on their faces and know that this was obviously something that they hadn’t seen before,” Denu said. “You know, it was from a small pocket of the Elkhorn fans, but those words are things you can’t take back.”
Haide Reyes, a mother of one of the Beloit players, told WISC her daughter was devastated by the chants.
“I saw her, she was crying and she goes down to her room,” Reyes explained. “I asked her if she was hungry and she said, ‘No, I’m OK. I want to be in my room.’ I was sad and I was angry, too.”
Elkhorn officials told WISC the game was stopped when a fan shouted “You suck” at a Beloit player who made an inappropriate gesture to the stands.
“This is not acceptable and as a district we will address the behavior of those response… We apologize to the Beloit players, fans, and community that were hurt and offended by the comments and words of a few of our students,” Tadlock said.
The district is investigating, but did not say how the students would be disciplined.
The Republican presidential candidate has said numerous times on the campaign trail that he will force Mexico to build a wall along the border to keep immigrants from illegally entering the United States.
