Road Rage Suspect Says Broken Window Was The Result Of A Misunderstanding

ROSELLE PARK, NJ (CBSNewYork) -- There are two sides to a confrontation between drivers in New Jersey.

As CBS2's Meg Baker reported, the alleged victims say they were attacked, but the suspect says it was a misunderstanding.

Rosemary Iglesias and her wife Mariela Castro got quite the scare on Tuesday night while driving through Roselle Park on their way home from the doctor's office.

"I was sitting here and she was driving. We were just stopping at the stop light," Rosemary said.

She said around 5:30 p.m. a man got out of his black SUV and started yelling at them saying they cut him off. He ran over to their Honda minivan.

"He standed right there, and he hit, punched the window," Rosemary said.

The couple has since gotten the window fixed.

"We borrowed some money because I get paid on Saturday. It is what it is. Have to do what we have to do," she said.

Sergio Oliveira, 44, was arrested for the attack. Police said it wasn't his fist run in with the law.

"I was in shock. I couldn't do nothing. She was telling me hurry up, take the picture. But I got the license plate," Mariela said.

CBS2 caught up with Oliveira on Friday.

"I couldn't even tell you why I got out. I had my little girl, 16-months-old, they came whipping around," he said.

He said he didn't intend to break the window, and showed CBS2 the scratches on his hand.

"I overreacted. I shouldn't have gotten out of the car. Unfortunately can't take that back. Should have stayed at the scene, but when a window explodes in front of you, you know you just did something, my reaction was 'get out of here," he said.

The surprise punch apparently came at the intersection of Faitoute Ave and Webster Ave.

Mariela was covered in broken glass from her driver's side window. She has multiple cuts on her hands, face, and in her eye.

"Still a little bit scared something is going to happen. What is the next step with him?" she said.

The couple is thankful they did not have their 3-year-old son with them in the back seat.
