Man Shot After Exchanging Gunfire With Police Officers In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP)-- Authorities say a man has been shot and wounded by police after exchanging gunfire with officers in Brooklyn as they tried to arrest his friend for a low-level warrant.

It happened around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday in the Farragut Houses public housing development, just west of the Brooklyn Navy Yard and south of the DUMBO and Vinegar Hill neighborhoods. The officers were in plain clothes, officials told CBS2.

Assistant Chief Jeffrey Maddrey said an 84th Precinct sergeant and three officers were on patrol near the building at 177 Sands St. and were looking for a wanted man. They found him and tried to stop him, when another man he was with pulled out a gun and fired at the officers, Maddrey said.

The man with the gun was shot in the wrist and ran off, police said. The officers were not injured.

"At this point, shots were fired in the vicinity of 177 Sands. There was a small pursuit into 237 Nassau," Maddrey told CBS2's Valerie Castro. "After a short investigation, the male was apprehended inside the building."

Police say they have not recovered a weapon.

Charges are pending amid the ongoing investigation.
