Queens Community Comes Together To Raise Money For Ecuador Quake Relief

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)-- A Queens community came together Sunday to help raise money for the victims of the deadly earthquake that hit Ecuador on April 16.

The powerful 7.8-magnitude quake hit the country's central coast and killed over 600 people.

The tragedy also left tens of thousands of people injured and homeless, 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported. About 280 schools were destroyed.

At La Boom, a club in Woodside, folks paid $10 a piece to get in to hear local musicians. Organizers said 100 percent of the funds will be donated to UNICEF to help with the rebuilding efforts.

Grace Moya was born in Ecuador and she said she is impressed how various Hispanic groups are coming together to help.

"I'm so happy that people from Colombia, people from Peru, they are coming together and they want to help us and I see how the heart is talking," she told 1010 WINS.

The earthquake is estimated to have caused $3 billion in damages.
