Wildwood Considers Banning Hoverboards On Boardwalk

WILDWOOD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Wildwood officials are considering banning hoverboards on the boardwalk.

Officials fear the insurance liability and the risk of fire on the wooden span.

"Somebody gets hurt and winds up suing, which is a daily occurrence on the boardwalk," Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr. told WCBS 880's Kelly Waldron. "Nobody's responsible for their actions anymore...we get sued like it's nobody's business."

While bicycles are allowed on the boardwalk during certain hours, Troiano says they're more sturdy and easier to control when hitting bumps than hoverboards.

Commissioner Anthony Leonetti is worried that overheated hoverboard batteries could burn down the boardwalk.

The town's commission is expected to consider an ordinance this week.

Mass transit systems including Amtrak, PATH, the MTA and NJ TRANSIT have banned or regulated use of the motorized scooters due to potential fire risk and injuries.
