Authorities ID 9-Year-Old Linden Boy Killed In Carbon Monoxide Incident

LINDEN, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Authorities have released the name of a young boy apparently killed by carbon monoxide inside his family's Linden home.

Oshiobugie Asekomhe, 9,  and his sister Emike, 10, were unresponsive when their mother found them in their bedroom at their home on 1157 Passaic Ave around 7:25 a.m. Tuesday.

The mother then began CPR. Emergency responders arrived and the girl was rushed to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in extremely critical condition, according to police. The boy was rushed to Trinitas Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

His sister remained hospitalized Wednesday in critical condition.

Authorities say high levels of carbon monoxide were found in the bedroom. They say the carbon monoxide may have been caused by the improper venting of fumes from the home's furnace.

There was a carbon monoxide detector in the house. But authorities say it didn't appear to be working due to either corroded or old batteries.

"We are going to be more vigilant in our efforts to try to communicate the importance of making sure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detector batteries are maintained on a regular basis," Linden Mayor Derek Armstead said on Tuesday.

Authorities say the incident appears to have been a "tragic accident.''
