Police: Fight Between Stony Brook University Students Leaves 1 With Slash Wound

STONY BROOK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A fight between two students at Stony Brook University Friday left one of them with a slash wound and the other in police custody, officials said.

Around 2:50 p.m. Friday, Stony Brook University police were called to a hallway on the first floor of the Melville Library for a fight between two students, police said. One of the two young men was slashed in the arm, and a knife was recovered at the scene, police said.

The Stony Brook Press news publication said the incident happened in the music section of the library. A witness told the publication that he saw two men wrestling and a woman trying to stop them, before one of the men took out a knife slashed the other.

The witness, Matt Tilton, told the publication that blood was gushing from the victim's hand. The publication said the suspect ran off and left the knife on the carpet of the music library.

The injured student was rushed to Stony Brook University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, police said. The other student was arrested and was in police custody late Friday and the knife was recovered, police said.

No charges had been announced as of early Friday evening.

Photos from the Stony Brook Press showed the injured student on a stretcher, a suspect being taken into custody, and blood spatter on the floor of the library.
