Fiber Cuts Lead To Time Warner Cable TV, Phone Outages Around NYC

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Time Warner Cable customers around New York City lost service Monday afternoon due to cuts in the fiber system.

Time Warner said multiple fiber cuts at a network provider affected phone service, and some TV services around the city.

As WCBS 880's Stephanie Colombini reported, the outage made for an inconvenience for anyone who missed a night of TV binging, but the outages also cost business owners money. Worse, Time Warner said its customers would be unable to call 911.

City officials urged anyone impacted by the outage to use their cellphones or FDNY call boxes to report any emergencies.

Numerous customers complained about the outages on Twitter – some of them from outside the city.

Service had been restored by 9 p.m., WCBS 880's Stephanie Colombini reported.

Third-party construction was to blame for the fiber cuts, Time Warner Cable said.

The New York state Department of Public Service said the outage from L3, a fiber service provider that also serves Verizon, cut service to 750,000 telephone customers.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the Department of Public Service and the Department of Homeland Security investigated the issue with 911 calls.
