Family Fights To Keep NYPD Cop Killer Behind Bars

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- As they did two years ago, family members of a slain New York City police officer went before a Parole Board and demanded his killer remain behind bars.

Officer Anthony Dwyer was just 23 years old when a suspect pushed him off a building after interrupting a robbery at a Times Square McDonald's on Oct. 17, 1989.

Dwyer's convicted killer – Eddie Matos – is once again up for parole.

On Friday, the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association joined Dwyer's parents and three siblings to demand the Parole Board deny Matos' release.

"Don't even look at his name, never let him out; never, never let this guy out of prison," Dwyer's mother, Marge, said.

In a letter, PBA President Patrick Lynch wrote that granting parole for Matos "would be a gross miscarriage of justice."

"We will come here to make sure the memory of our hero police officer is never forgotten," Lynch told reporters Friday. "This family will always be here, this family will always remember Anthony."

Lynch, Dwyer's family and dozens of officers vowed to be back in two years when Matos again comes up for parole.
