Teens Turn To Readily Available Flower Seeds For A Cheap But Dangerous High

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- There was a warning Monday night about an unusual way that kids are getting high.

It's a common product that's cheap and available at garden stores everywhere.

As CBS2's Brian Conybeare reported, some kids are getting high on seeds.

A YouTube video shows a young man purportedly recording his own psychedelic trip, but he didn't take LSD, instead he claims he ate common plant seeds.

"It definitely makes me laugh," he says.

Several Massachusetts students wound up in the hospital after doing the same thing earlier this month.

The seeds include flowers like "heavenly blue morning glory" and others containing lysergic acid, or LSA, a cousin of LSD.

Police even got the Home Depot in Somerset, Massachusetts, to pull the seeds, but the company told CBS2 it was only temporary.

Kim Warek is a teacher who was buying seeds and plants for her classroom at the Home Depot in New Rochelle on Monday.

"It doesn't make any sense. Why even have them on the shelf if kids are doing this? They just pull them all," she said.

The seeds are available for sale at Home Depot and virtually every garden center nationwide. They cost less than $2.

"I think kids will do anything to get high," Lillian Neuman said.

Neuman has been a drug counselor for 20 years, specializing in teen addiction.

"These kids have to know that this stuff is dangerous, but they don't want to hear that," she said.

Some packages say "seed contained herein is for planting purposes only," but that isn't stopping kids from taking them.

Neuman said the chemicals can make users psychotic.

"Just because you read something on the Internet, you don't know what's going on with your body," she said.

Simple seeds are now something else for parents to worry about.
