Excessive Lead Shuts Down Fountains, Sinks At Clarkstown Schools

NEW CITY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Dozens of drinking fountains and sinks have been shut off in the Clarkstown School District, after high levels of lead were found in the water.

As WCBS 880's John Metaxas reported, outside the Felix Festa Middle School, parent Lisa Ross said she was worried – as her son's school had 31 sinks testing above the limit for lead in the water.

"The two highest here were Festa and Northern," Ross said. "All three kids were at both schools."

In all, more than 100 outlets in the district's 13 schools were found to have lead levels above 20 parts per billion. They have been turned off until the district can come up with a remediation plan.

"So there is a plan, I guess, in place, but to hear about now, it's a real problem."

The Clarkstown School Board meets June 2. Some parents are expecting a contentious meeting.
