Man Found Shot In Car In Chelsea

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A man was found shot and wounded in a car in Chelsea early Sunday.

The 27-year-old man was found around 5:20 a.m. in a car at 113 Seventh Ave. with a gunshot to his back and shoulder, police told CBS2. Five bullet holes could be seen through the driver's side window.

The gunfire appears to have happened at the corner, where the driver had just got behind the wheel following a late dinner at all-night hot-spot Cafeteria, CBS2's Steve Langford reported.

Surveillance video appears to show a man running up to the driver's window and opening fire on the 27-year-old man. The victim is seen speeding away in the wrong direction on Seventh Avenue.

The man was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center and was expected to survive.

As 1010 WINS' Darius Radzius reported, area resident Glenna Marshall said she never expected to see a shooting near her home.

"I think it's appalling. I really do. I really think it's appalling that this is what our country's come to," she said.

Police sources and witnesses said the gunman got into a Mercedes and fled. The motive is unknown in the apparent targeted shooting of the man behind the wheel.

Many who live near Seventh Avenue between 17th and 18th streets woke up to the crime scene. It was surreal to resident Michael Lowenstein.

"You see a Bentley shot up, it's kind of out of a movie," he said. "It's not something you'd expect to see every day."

As of Sunday evening, there had been no arrests, police said.
