Nassau University Medical Center Welcomes Mickey, A Falcon Chick

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Long Island hospital has helped with the birth of dozens of babies since 1997. But this little one isn't human.

Nassau University Medical Center is celebrating the arrival of Mickey, a falcon chick that hatched on a 17th story window ledge. Hospital officials call the parents Mr. and Mrs. Meadowbrook.

Biologist Chris Nadareski put a band on Mickey so the state Department of Environmental Conservation can track him.

"They are becoming increasingly more common throughout Long Island on anyplace that might resemble a cliff ledge," he told 1010 WINS' Al Jones.

He'll start flying in about a month.

The 17-day-old chick is an only child. Four other eggs failed to hatch. They'll be analyzed. The current theory is that chilly spring weather was to blame.
