Trump Now Says He Won't Debate Bernie Sanders Unless He Wins Democratic Nomination

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Offer rescinded.

Donald Trump now says he likely won't debate Bernie Sanders after all, and will only debate whoever wins the Democratic nomination.

"Based on the fact that the Democratic nominating process is totally rigged and Crooked Hillary Clinton and Deborah Wasserman Schultz will not allow Bernie Sanders to win, and now that I am the presumptive Republican nominee, it seems inappropriate that I would debate the second place finisher," Trump said in a statement Friday. "Likewise, the networks want to make a killing on these events and are not proving to be too generous to charitable causes, in this case, women's health issues. Therefore, as much as I want to debate Bernie Sanders - and it would be an easy payday - I will wait to debate the first place finisher in the Democratic Party, probably Crooked Hillary Clinton, or whoever it may be."

Trump first floated the idea of debating Sanders Wednesday night during an appearance on a late-night talk show, and doubled down on the offer Thursday.

"I would love to debate Bernie. He's a dream," Trump said after reaching the number of delegates he needed to clinch the nomination Thursday. "I said I'd love to debate him, but I want a lot of money to be put up for charity. So what we'll do is, if we can raise for maybe women's health issues or something, if we can raise $10-15 million for charity, which would be a very appropriate amount, I understand the television business very well. I think it would get very high ratings. It should be in a big arena somewhere. And we could have a lot of fun with it. I'd love to debate Bernie."

According to CBS News' delegate count, Clinton is fewer than 100 delegates shy of the 2,383 delegates needed to clinch the Democratic nomination. Clinton has 2,310, and Sanders trails with 1,536.
