Police: Man Robbed Woman, Knocked Her Unconscious In Gramercy Park

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police were searching late Wednesday for a suspect who robbed and beat a woman in a Gramercy Park building.

Around 2:20 a.m. Sunday, the suspect came up to the 30-year-old woman from behind in a building near East 18th Street and First Avenue, police said. He placed her in a chokehold and dragged her to the floor, police said.

The woman tried to fight back, but the suspect punched her in the face numerous times until she was unconscious, police said.

When the woman regained consciousness, the suspect was gone, police said. The woman also realized her cellphone was missing and her underwear had been lowered to her knees, police said.

The woman was rushed to Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital for an evaluation, police said.

The woman was for injuries to her face, head, neck and legs, police sources told CBS2. There was no evidence of a sexual assault, and the motive appeared to be robbery, sources said.

The suspect was described as a black male about 25 years old, weighing about 150 pounds and standing about 5 feet 7 to 5 feet 10 inches tall. He had a beard and was last seen with a black T-shirt, dark-colored pants, and a yellow metal chain around his neck.

Police have released surveillance images and video.
