NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., is proposing a bill to block annoying robocalls.

WCBS 880’s Stephanie Colombini reported the Democratic senator said robocalls are on the rise, especially in New York.

Schumer said data showed New York City’s 917 and 347 area codes are some of the biggest targets for robocalls in the country, receiving about 50 million in April.

“There’s nothing more frustrating than when you’re involved in having dinner with someone, your family, in the middle of something, trying to concentrate on something, you’re phone rings, you want to answer it, and it’s a robocall,” Schumer said.

Schumer said technology exists to block robocalls, but phone companies just have to use it.

The senator’s bill would require all providers to offer free blocking technology to consumers.
