Surprise Kanye West Show Turns To Chaos In The East Village

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- What was supposed to be a surprise Kanye West show in the East Village quickly turned to chaos as thousands of fans descended on the venue.

The pandemonium early Monday morning drew big complaints, as thousands of fans hit the streets and left behind serious damage. Neighbors were outraged that more was not done.

The question late Monday was who was responsible, was it West himself, Webster Hall where he was to perform, or the NYPD? CBS2's Tracee Carrasco demanded answers from all of them.

On Monday afternoon, Dexter Schiefele -- irritated and tired – was sweeping up trash outside the building he owns next to Webster Hall and tossing it back onto the stairs of concert venue.

"Sheer insanity -- a mob scene," Schiefele said. "I've never seen anything like it."

His wife described the scene the night before.

"You couldn't get out the front door. They wouldn't let us out of the gate - the crowd of people that was standing here," said Jessica Scheifele. "So thank God there wasn't a fire."

Early Monday morning, around 4,000 people hoping to attend the pop-up show swarmed Webster Hall at 12 E. 11th St., which only holds 1,500. They climbed on top of cars, a postal truck, dumpsters and scaffolding and hung out of windows hoping to get a better view.

"I saw kids trampling windshields of cars," one fan said. "It was surreal. It was honestly something that should have never happened and it spiraled out of control."

"People on top of people, it was like a marathon," a man who works at a nearby deli told 1010 WINS' John Montone. "People were running, sprinting -- it was crazy."

West was scheduled to perform at the Governors Ball on Sunday, but that concert was canceled due to the weather. Somehow through word of mouth, it was then rumored that he would be performing the pop-up concert at Webster Hall, CBS2's Magdalena Doris reported.

The secret show was hinted to start at 2 a.m. and according to West's Twitter page, was sold out by 1 a.m.

Michael Gomez woke up Monday morning to find his two vehicles damaged. He has filed a police report and wants West to pay for the repairs.

"There's no reason to do something like this -- no reason at all," Gomez said.

Shirley Green of the East Village also had her car dented, dinged and damaged during the rush for the planned concert.

"I just want my car fixed," she said.

West had made an announcement about the concert on Snapchat. He was seen in a video clip on the phone, asking someone to call the mayor and ask him to "shut down the block about four streets and put screens so they can have a party outside" because the concert was sold out.

But the mayor's office said they never spoke to him or authorized the gathering.

Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted a photo of himself on the phone with the message, "Does someone have Kanye's number?"

" Great block parties are planned. & I can throw one w/ you to benefit NYC kids," de Blasio tweeted.

When Webster Hall tweeted that there was no show shortly before 2 a.m., the crowd of thousands flowed into the streets.

In another Snapchat video, West can be seen hanging out of a car to greet those who had been waiting for him.

"We just saw a black Mercedes-Benz pull up and a whole bunch of people running so we ran over to the car and it was Kanye West standing out of the roof of the Mercedes-Benz and Travis Scott coming out of the window," one man said.

"You know how crazy it is out there, why would you come down here and like, stir it up more?" fan Ian Servantes said.

One woman dancing on a car fell and broke her ankle, WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported.

"There was a girl, she had a compound fracture in her ankle," said concert goer Kevin Woods. "Bone was coming out of her leg, south side of the street. It was pretty bananas."

Green told CBS2's Valerie Castro she filed a report with police about the damage to her car, and said her insurance will cover the cost. But she said that's not enough.

"I think Kanye West should take responsibility for this," she said. "He was the one that chose the concert here. He brought all the fans here. He showed up and then he left."

CBS2 asked the Mayor's office if West faces any kind of citation, and if the car owners -- who said not enough was done to prevent damage -- would be compensated. A Mayor's office representative referred CBS2 back to the mayor's Tweet.

"It's not fair," Gomez said.

The NYPD said they too were in the dark. But when the crowd started getting out of hand, the NYPD said they called for backup and got everything under control.

Residents, though, disagree. They said police stood by and watched the chaos unfold, and were shocked that only one arrest was made on a disorderly conduct citation.

"This club is a nightmare. Everybody on this street knows it," Jessica Scheifele said. "Thousands of people and you know, the police don't do anything."

West's wife, Kim Kardashian West, later issued an apology to fans.

She posted a picture of the crowd on Twitter and said, "Last night was crazy! Kanye wished he could have performed last night!!!"

"He really tried so hard but it was ultimately out of his control! He has the best fans in the whole world," she said in another tweet.

She then promised that West will "make up" the pop-up show.

Meanwhile, the NYPD said due to the large crowd that was gathered – with the safety of all involved – the performance at Webster Hall was canceled early Monday morning. The NYPD also said those who jumped on car roofs will indeed be responsible for the damage.

The NYPD did not respond to CBS2's questions about compensations for residents.

CBS2 has also reached out to Webster Hall, but the concert venue has not issued further comment.
