Brookhaven Councilwoman Raises Awareness After Donating Kidney To Lifelong Friend

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Jane Bonner says 'there's a reason God gave us two kidneys, so we can share the spare.'

On April 26, Bonner donated one of her kidneys to her lifelong friend Tom D'Antonio.

The two have been friends for 40 years. D'Antonio first developed kidney disease when he was 29, he has been given three kidneys since then.

"When I look at him now his eyes are clear, his skin is pink, he's got energy," Bonner said.

As 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported, Bonner is a councilwoman in the town of Brookhaven.

"I feel very very passionately about sharing the spare. I was back to work in 10 days," she said.

She said it's not about patting herself on the back, it's about making people aware of what's possible.
