Families Gather At Chelsea Piers For 11th Annual NAC Kids Olympics

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)-- The excitement is real and the opportunity is nothing short of inspirational.

New Alternatives for Children held its 11th annual Kids Olympics this weekend.

"We have extraordinary outcomes for our kids," Dr. Arlene Goldsmith, director of NAC, told CBS2's Cindy Hsu.

The welfare-based agency helps disadvantaged and chronically ill children, CBS2's Cindy Hsu reported.

"This is a great way for them to do adaptive baseball, wheelchair basketball, to be part of something that all kids deserve," Goldsmith said.

Kids and families all gathered at Chelsea Piers to see and play some sports they normally wouldn't have the chance to do. Many of NAC's children live in poverty, are disabled, or have had more surgeries than birthdays.

"It just gives me great joy, but also great hope that these children will be able to leave NAC and be productive citizens," Goldsmith said. "It doesn't have to be soccer-- just trying to pursue something new that they can learn and improve that."

More than 200 volunteers, like D.J. Diveny from the New York Red Bulls soccer team, were on hand to interact with the kids and even teach them some sweet new moves. But there were many activities to have fun with  like learning a dance routine, baseball practice, and gymnastics.

The goal was to give these kids the courage to try new things and letting them know they can do anything in life.
