Police Crack Down On Drag Racing In East Ward Of Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Police in Newark have launched a crackdown on drag racing in that city's East Ward.

As WCBS 880's Kelly Waldron reported, the crackdown came in response to community complaints that drivers were drag racing in the area of Foundry Street and Avenue P.

Newark Department of Public Safety Capt. Derek Glenn said police have set up shop in that very area.

"The last two days we've done operations that have resulted in over 48 motor vehicle stops," Glenn said. "More than a hundred summonses were issued. One driver was arrested for being unlicensed."

A majority of the motorists were from Jersey City, Union City, Elizabeth and other towns, police said.

Glenn said the operation will continue until the problem is solved.
