NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Frank Ocean is offering an emotional reflection more than a week after the mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, left 49 dead and dozens more wounded.

The singer, who is gay, writes in a Tumblr post “many hate us and wish we didn’t exist.” He also relates a story about his father using a racial epithet toward a transgender waitress when Ocean was 6 years old and discusses anti-gay messages he heard in church.

“Many don’t see anything wrong with passing down the same old values that send thousands of kids into suicidal depression each year. So we say pride and we express love for who and what we are. Because who else will in earnest?” he wrote.

Ocean also appeared to touch on the debate over which bathrooms transgender people can use, writing “many are annoyed by our wanting to be married like everyone else or use the correct restroom like everyone else.”

The 28-year-old Ocean opened up about his sexual orientation in 2012.

The singer said he daydreams “on the idea that maybe all this barbarism and all these transgressions against ourselves is an equal and opposite reaction to something better happening in this world, some great swelling wave of openness and wakefulness out here.”
