Penn Station Signal Trouble Shuts Down Westbound LIRR Trains During Evening Rush

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Westbound Long Island Rail Road trains were completely halted during the evening rush Tuesday due to signal trouble, and eastbound trains were hit with major delays.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority reported that all westbound service to Penn Station on the LIRR was suspended early Tuesday evening due to signal trouble. Normal service resumed by 7:40 p.m.

As CBS2's Christine Sloan reported, outbound service on the LIRR was also delayed by for all destinations during the signal issues. Hundreds of commuters at Penn Station were monumentally frustrated.

The signal problem prevented the LIRR from using three tracks for eastbound service, and the LIRR had to share the four remaining tracks with Amtrak trains -- making for a huge mess.

New York City Transit, which operates the bus and subway systems, cross-honored LIRR fares during the westbound suspension, but ceased to do so afterward.

NJ TRANSIT trains were also delayed due to the signal problems.
