NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Investigators say a onetime prostitute is a key player in the New York City corruption scandal, and she may be asked to testify in court.
CBS2 Political Reporter Marcia Kramer spoke with the woman Friday. She said she had no idea whom she was dealing with.READ MORE: New Jersey's Own Athing Mu And Sydney McLaughlin Set Olympic Records
Gabi Grecko said she was traumatized by the experience. But the most surprising thing may have been that she did not know the men she was hired to have sex with were NYPD officers.
When she found out, she said she was, “Shocked, really shocked.”
CBS2 first caught up with Grecko as she was on her way to meet her attorney.
“The plane experience was so traumatic that I stopped doing it,” she said.
Grecko now finds herself in an uncomfortable spot, and spotlight. She admitted that she is the woman whom a federal complaint says was hired by a pair of businessmen for a high-flying plane trip to Las Vegas for a Super Bowl party in 2013.
The men who hired Grecko were Jeremy Reichberg and Jona Rechnitz. Among those she was to entertain were reportedly NYPD Inspector James Grant and a detective friend.
This week, Grant was charged with conspiracy to commit honest services wire fraud. Reichberg was also hit with the same charge on the grounds that he exchanged bribes for “cops on call,” U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said Monday.
Three other officers, including NYPD Deputy Chief Michael Harrington, were also charged.
The gifts to Grant allegedly included hotels rooms for a vacation in Rome, a luxury watch and home repairs, a video game system for his kids and jewelry for his wife, according to the complaint. And the complaint went on to say Grant was invited on the all-expense-paid trip to Las Vegas and a prostitute was hired to stay in his room.
Attorney Robert Baum wanted to do much of the talking for Grecko on Friday, because, he said, his client is a potential witness in the federal case against Grant.READ MORE: Broadway Returns After Nearly 17-Month Shutdown With 1st Performances Of 'Passover'
“It something that she regrets. It happened at a very vulnerable time in her life,” Baum said. “It’s something that she wants to put behind her and never look back again.”
“It was sort of traumatic,” Grecko added. “I’m really glad that it’s over. It’s sad that it’s being brought up again.”
According to the complaint, Rechnitz, who is a confidential witness for the feds, was the one who chartered the private jet for $59,000 to go to Las Vegas. He also arranged for “prostitute one” to “come on the private jet and spend a weekend with the group… while in Las Vegas, the prostitute stayed in Grants room… Grant and others took advantage of her services during the trip.”
Prosecutors alleged Grecko also allegedly had sex with Grant’s friend, NYPD Detective Michael Milici.
“While she doesn’t look forward to testifying, she will, if called, provide honest, forthright testimony to the best of her recollection,” Baum said Friday.
But the fact is that if Grecko is called, she will be called to testify against high-ranking police officers. Kramer asked Grecko if she had any fear about it.
“It’s just very embarrassing,” Grecko said. “It was a dark time in my life when I needed to support myself, and I had no other way to pay my rent – or, so it’s not something I’m proud of, and I really don’t want it to define me or my career or anything.”
“It’s certainly not the person she is now,” added attorney Baum.
Reporters peppered Grecko with many questions, but her attorney cut them off.
“I just wanted to tell my side of the story and humanize myself, so that I wasn’t just labeled as an escort or something like that, because I am not. I’m far from that,” Grecko said.MORE NEWS: Long Island Bus Driver Charged With DWI, Leaving Scene Of 2 Accidents
Grecko said she is now an actress, a clothing designer and a reality star.
