CBS2 EXCLUSIVE: Driver Walks Away Unscathed After 10-Pound Piece Of Metal Crashes Through Windshield
ROCKAWAY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A piece of metal crashed into a driver's car and smashed his windshield on Route 80 in New Jersey Tuesday.
In a CBS2 exclusive, the driver, Sylvester Jones, told CBS2's Dave Carlin the 10-pound piece of metal came at him like a rocket while he was driving alone on eastbound Route 80 in Rockaway Township.
"I don't know what this is, but you see it crashed right through the front of the windshield," Jones said.
There was shattered glass everywhere after the object came through the windshield.
"I think I was probably in too much in shock to do anything about it, so just sort of kept it straight," Jones said about driving after the metal object came flying into his car.
Jones said it's still sinking in how much danger he dodged.
"It could've been a heck of a lot worse, so I'm pretty grateful for that," Jones stated.
Keith Grimm, a mechanic at Elite Automotive, said a passenger would have taken a direct hit.
"If you look in there, it ripped the seat," Grimm said.
Grimm said while it's unclear where the metal came from, he suspected it came off a big rig.
"Broke off a truck and who knows," Grimm explained.
Jones remembered an 18-wheeler zooming past at the time and said maybe the truck driver doesn't even know what happened.
Luckily for the married dad, who works for the Staples Corporation in Secaucus, walked away uninjured.
