Cardinal Dolan In Wake Of Deadly Shootings: Time For Us To Return To God

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Cardinal Timothy Dolan is asking people to come back to God in the wake of the recent shootings that left two black men and five police officers dead across the nation.

WCBS 880's Kelly Waldron reported Dolan told those at St. Patrick's Cathedral Sunday that it's time for all of us to return to God and his teachings for repair.

"Come back to the Lord. Get back to the basics. Know what God expects," Dolan said during a unity mass.

Dolan told a packed cathedral the nation is in trouble, but warned against following the peddlers of anger and division, CBS2's Steve Langford reported.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said we need to reach back into our history when guardians protected villages.

"Our police are our guardians. An attack on our police is an attack on all of us and there has to be and there will be a deep and mutual respect between police and community," de Blasio said.

De Blasio said it may take time, but New York City will become the example.

The nation has been on edge since last week's shootings. Demonstrations throughout the streets of Manhattan continued throughout Sunday afternoon for calls of peace, justice, and reform.
