Car Fire Shuts Down Brooklyn-Bound Hugh L. Carey Tunnel
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- All Brooklyn-bound lanes of the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel were closed for a period of time Monday night due to a car on fire.
Firefighters were called to the scene around 7:50 p.m., officials said.
The Brooklyn-bound lanes of the tunnel, formerly known as the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, was closed for about an hour and a half.
Images from the scene showed smoky conditions and low visibility in the tunnel. Nine people had to be treated for smoke inhalation, officials said.
Twitter photos of the car that was on fire showed it mounted on a flatbed tow truck, with its hood melted and charred.
Information about the cause of the car fire was not immediately available.
The tunnel was moving in both directions without delays by 9:40 p.m.
