LIRR Third Track Plan Leaves Floral Park Mayor Worried About Pool Complex

FLORAL PARK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Plans to add a third track to the Long Island Rail Road in Floral Park have left the mayor worried about the consequences for a new pool complex.

As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, it cost $6 million to construct a beautiful and fun new pool complex in the village of Floral Park.

But now, Mayor Thomas Tweedy said plans to add a third track to the LIRR line that passes nearby are worrying him, because it would be just feet from the pool complex.

He said dirt and debris would fill the air, and he is concerned about children who use the park. He said the complex could even crack because of the third track construction.
"It's tough to say what the impact would be, but I don't see anything good coming of it," Tweedy said. "But I know the quality of life will be directly impacted."

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said it does major construction all the time, many of them right up against other structures. The agency said it looks at structures to make sure they are not disrupted.

The proposed third track would cost more than a billion dollars and would run for about 10 miles between Floral Park and Hicksville. It will affect Bellerose, Stewart, Floral Park, New Hyde Park, Garden City, Mineola, and Westbury.
