State Police spokesman Lt. Brian Polite said the preliminary investigation indicates a tractor-trailer burst into flames after hitting a bridge support.

According to police, the driver of the truck died on scene and was carrying some kind of soft drink at the time of the crash.

The name of the driver has not been released. No other injuries were reported.

A HAZMAT team was called to the scene of the crash after fluid was found leaking into a nearby stream.

The eastbound lanes were closed for the investigation, causing traffic to back up for miles. The westbound lanes of I-78 remained open. State Police informed drivers to expect extended delays and to plan alternate routes if possible.

The crash is under investigation.
