2 Women Struck By Lightning In Jersey Shore Community

POINT PLEASANT BEACH, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP)-- Two women have been struck by lightning in separate incidents in a Jersey Shore town.

Point Pleasant Beach police say both women were conscious when emergency responders arrived on scene. They were both being treated at a hospital and are expected to be okay.

Flo Melo with the Point Pleasant Beach First Aid and Emergency Squad said lightning is common in the summer.

"But it's not often that we see people get hit. We get buildings and phone poles hit. But it's rare that we actually see two people get hit in the same day," he told WCBS 880's Stephanie Colombini.

The first incident occurred shortly before 3 p.m. Saturday, when lightning struck a 63-year-old woman who was on New Jersey Avenue, near the town's beach area.

The second came less than 10 minutes later when lightning struck a 54-year-old woman sitting in a parked car in the 300 block of Ocean Avenue.
