Nude Male Sculptures On Display In Empty Gramercy Park Building

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A public display of some private parts has been turning heads in Gramercy Park.

CBS2's Jessica Layton reported that riders heading into and coming out of the Gramercy Park subway station at Park Avenue South and 22nd Street are greeted by nude sculptures of men.

"I'm not prepared for that on a Monday," one person said.

Another commented, "You know, for once, it's not the body of a naked woman."

Some believe it's great marketing to bring a new tenant into the empty 281 Park Avenue South building, but resident Hank Sinkel is not a fan because a church and school are nearby.

"It's all about money," he said. "No boundaries anymore, it's ridiculous."

Art student Desiree Kong said she didn't even notice the parts others are staring at.

"I see naked men, I guess, a lot, so it wasn't shocking," Kong said.

A representative for the company that owns the building said the sculptures are the work of artist Richard DuPont.

She said RFR Holdings is marketing the property, but the owners wouldn't go on camera to talk about why they install art and that the neon "rent here now" signs that the company installed are not part of the art.

The sculptures will be taken down by Labor Day.

CBS2 tried getting in touch with DuPont by calling his gallery, but have not heard back.
