Williamsburg Residents Complain Trash Piling Up At New Bus Terminal

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Williamsburg residents are complaining that the new and improved bus terminal is starting to look like a dump.

CBS2's Esha Ray reported they're saying trash is piling up and they want the city to clean it up.

"It's dirty, it's nasty," resident Jose Rivera said. "It looks really nasty."

"It's a mess. They should do something about it," resident John Rios said.

The plaza doesn't have many waste bins nearby, so trash piles up in the tree pits and people have to sit in the mess.

"It's unsightly. It's a real shame in terms of investing a lot of people to upgrade these facilities, introduce these tree pits and then have them kind of look nasty, it's not that great," NYC 33rd District Councilmember Stephen Levin said.

Levin said the growing trash is partly due to the increasing population of South Williamsburg.

Sanitation workers showed up with shovels and bags a few hours after CBS2 called.

"In an effort to reduce littering, the Department of Sanitation will be placing two DSNY litter baskets on the surrounding corners of Havemeyer and South 4th Street," the department said in a statement. "There are already DSNY litter baskets on the corner of Broadway and Havemeyer. Sanitation will continue to monitor the baskets for proper use and service."

As for keeping the tree pits clean, the department said that's the responsibility of the MTA, which owns the bus terminal.
