CBS2 Exclusive: Charter Boat Rescues Couple Stranded In Water 2-Miles Off Staten Island

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A couple was rescued nearly two miles off the Staten Island shoreline on Tuesday.

They had gone rafting in the waters off the Lower Bay, but didn't realize the current was going to carry them away.

A passing charter boat spotted the pair and towed them back to shore. CBS2 obtained exclusive video of the rescue.

The captain said the couple could have been killed.

"They obviously couldn't get back to shore. If they had gotten into the middle of the channel they would have been in big danger as the ships come in, they cannot stop. They wouldn't even see them actually," Vincent Vetere said.

The rafters had friends back on land who called for help. The charter boat arrived before the Coast Guard.
