Report: Tom Coughlin Takes Job With NFL Football Operations Department

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Tom Coughlin has a new gig.

The former Giants coach has accepted a full-time position in the NFL's Football Operations Department, ESPN reported Wednesday, citing multiple sources. It was not clear what his exact role will be.

The Football Operations Department deals with the league's rules and officiating.

Coughlin resigned as the Giants' coach in January after 12 seasons. He won Super Bowls following the 2007 and 2011 seasons, but the Giants had three consecutive losing years at the end of his tenure.

The 69-year-old initially said he hoped to coach again this season. The Philadelphia Eagles interviewed him, but he later removed himself from consideration. The San Francisco 49ers also interviewed Coughlin, but hired Chip Kelly instead.

At the coach's farewell news conference, Giants co-owner John Mara said Coughlin had agreed to help the Giants in some capacity in the future. According to reports, the team offered him a consultant job.

But a couple of months later, Coughlin said there had not been much discussion from the team about the position and that he felt it was best to move on.

Last week, the Giants announced that Coughlin was among three people being inducted into the team's Ring of Honor.
