Pokemon Go Player Finds $2,000 On Ground In Hackettstown

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A person playing Pokemon Go is being credited with helping a Hackettstown resident get back $2,000 in missing cash.

Police got a report around 2 p.m. Wednesday from an individual who said they lost the money along Main Street.

A Pokemon Go player later found the missing cash on the ground at a "Pokestop," which are real-life local landmarks or other spots in the game, and went to a nearby business to let them know he was turning the money over to police.

That's when police said a cop investigating the initial lost money report was told by an employee of the business that a man had just found the cash.

"He saw that person matching the description walking on Main Street and then that person turned over the money to the officer and then that money was then given to its rightful owner," Hackettstown Sgt. Darren Tynan told 1010 WINS.

Tynan said if it wasn't for the popular smartphone game, the money probably would have never been found.

"The person that found it lives in the neighboring town and they come into Hackettstown because we have more Pokemon spots and characters for them to get so it was an outsider that came into Hackettstown to play Pokemon Go that located the money," he said. "That one location where the money was dropped was also one of the Pokestops, so if that wasn't there, we don't if that money would have been turned over or found."

It's not the first time a user has discovered something while playing the "augmented reality" game in search of Pokemon creatures to catch.

One woman in Wyoming discovered a body in a river while playing the game and in Texas, two players saved a dog that had been left for dead.

Police said the game also has players crashing cars, walking into traffic and wandering into yards and are warning users to be aware of their surroundings.
