'Cats' Makes Return To Broadway Stage

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- You might say one of the biggest hit musicals has clawed its way back to Broadway.

The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical "Cats" is now playing again at the Neil Simon Theatre, 250 W. 52nd St., under its original director, Trevor Nunn.

The musical is based on T.S. Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats."

The original Broadway production opened in 1982. It bid farewell to Broadway in 2000 after an almost 18-year run.

It is now the fourth longest-running show in Broadway history.

"Cats'' was the first of the big British musicals with lavish settings and pop scores to invade Broadway in the 1980s. It earned a fortune for Lloyd Webber and producer Cameron Mackintosh, who went on to bring "Les Miserables,'' 'The Phantom of the Opera'' and "Miss Saigon'' to Broadway.
