NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A group of protesters in New York City is hoping to force a shutdown of City Hall Monday until Mayor Bill de Blasio meets their demands.
The group, Millions March NYC, says over 1,000 people are expected to take part in the protest at City Hall park.READ MORE: NYPD: Delivery Worker Stabbed To Death, E-Bike Stolen Near Sara D. Roosevelt Park
It says it is asking for three things: The firing of Police Commissioner Bill Bratton and an end to broken windows policing, payment to survivors and victims of police brutality and the city’s police budget to be redirected to minority communities.
One of the organizers became angry when he was asked if he can guarantee the event will stay peaceful, 1010 WINS’ Glenn Schuck reported.
“I have to say I’m really tired of the way that people are always asking us to be peaceful,” Nabil Hassein said. “Why don’t you all go ask the police to be peaceful.”READ MORE: Bill Clinton Discharged From Hospital After Treatment For Infection
Hassein said he is constantly afraid.
“Every time I walk down the street, I feel that they could kill me and that they are not going to be held accountable in anyway,” he said.
The NYPD has set up metal barricades around the park. Ann Jeffries said it’s an intimidation tactic.
“I feel like I’m in Iraq,” she told WCBS 880’s Marla Diamond. “I’ve never been to Iraq, OK, but it feels like we are getting ready for war.”MORE NEWS: Suffolk Police: Man Killed In Hit-And-Run On Long Island Expressway In Brentwood
Police said the group is allowed to protest, but is not allowed to occupy the park, Schuck reported. Organizers say they will stay there until their demands are met.
