Memorial Sloan-Kettering To Build Outpatient Center At Nassau Coliseum Site

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A town board has approved a site plan for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to build a $140 million, 105,000 square-foot outpatient treatment and research facility at Long Island's Nassau Coliseum site.

Nassau County sold a 5-acre parcel of the Coliseum site to Sloan Kettering for $6.5 million last year. Along with the research and outpatient facility, Sloan Kettering also plans to build a parking garage, which will be accessible to stadium goers during off-hours, Newsday reported.

Hempstead Building Department officials still have to approve specific architectural details and construction plans before work begins.

Hempstead Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby says the project will provide jobs and address "areas of genuine medical need.''

The original Nassau Coliseum has been undergoing renovations since shutting its doors in 2015. The new complex, spearheaded as a partnership between developer Bruce Ratner and Nassau County, is expected to open by Spring 2017. It will have about 4,000 fewer and renovated amenities.
