Emaciated, Flea-Infested Dog Abandoned At LI Animal Shelter

SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A severely neglected dog with an oxygen tube was found abandoned in front of the Smithtown Animal Shelter on Tuesday.

The 14-year-old poodle was in critical condition -- covered in fleas, anemic, starving -- and had discharge coming from its eyes when it was taken in for veterinary assistance, SPCA officials said.

Officials believe the dog had been abused for a long time.

"Severely emaciated and in critical condition when it was found. Just to give you an idea of how bad it is, it was covered with fleas, it was severely anemic, the fur was worn away, and the teeth not only were rotten, but caked with fur from constant biting. So you could imagine how this dog suffered for such a long period of time," SPCA Chief Roy Gross told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall.

The dog is currently under professional veterinary care, officials said.

The SPCA is asking anyone with information about the incident or the suspect to call (631) 382-7722. Callers can remain anonymous.

The Suffolk County SPCA is offering a $2,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest
