Police: 'Gang-Related' Graffiti Found On Homes, Car Windows Broken In Suffolk County

FARMINGVILLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Suffolk County police are searching for suspects after more than a dozen homes were spray painted with what appears to be gang-related graffiti, and several cars were found with their windows busted out in residential areas of Long Island.

Car windows were smashed out on Locust Avenue in Farmingville early Wednesday morning, WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs reported.

In Coram, several homes and cars were vandalized with what police described as "gang-related" graffiti.

WLNY's Richard Rose reported the vandals struck around 3 a.m. when everyone was sleeping. Six windows had their windows smashed, including one with a cinderblock.

Arnold Mobley discovered his car's broken window just minutes after the vandals struck.

"I think it's terrible," he said. "This is a nice neighborhood. That doesn't happen around here."

Around the same time, two miles away in Coram, vandals spray-painted eight vehicles, including one parked in a driveway where they also spray-painted the garage door.

"The graffiti are clear markings or signs from a gang known as the Young Guns, which is a set of the Bloods," Suffolk County Police Commissioner Timothy Sini said.

Sini said the Young Guns gang is known to operate in the Suffolk area, although not in the neighborhoods that were struck overnight.

Sini said his detectives don't believe the incidents are connected.

"At this point in time, there aren't those markings -- the gang markings in Farmingville -- but this remains an active investigation," Sini explained.

Residents are now cleaning up the damage.

"Sounds like drunk kids running around doing this, you know?" Bob, of Farmingville, said. "It's ridiculous."

Christina De'Oliverra, 17, is upset about the damage to her vehicle, even as she struggles to make tuition payments to start college next month.

"About $200. I believe my insurance will cover it. It's just one thing after another," she said.

Police said detectives are still canvassing the neighborhoods in search of surveillance video, but residents said they do not have cameras.

The investigation is ongoing.
