Yankees Place Eovaldi On 15-Day DL, Recall Severino

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Yankees, who are still chasing a playoff spot despite parting ways with several key players in recent weeks, will be without one of their starting pitchers for at least a couple of weeks.

The Yankees on Friday placed right-hander Nathan Eovaldi on the 15-day disabled list with an elbow injury. The move is retroactive to Thursday.

Eovaldi was pulled from his start Wednesday at Boston after just 12 pitches. On Thursday, he was evaluated by team physician Christopher Ahmad and underwent an MRI. It's unclear how much time Eovaldi is expected to miss.

The 26-year-old missed the final 3 1/2 weeks of last season with elbow inflammation.

Eovaldi is 9-8 with a 4.76 ERA this season.

To fill his roster spot, the Yankees recalled pitcher Luis Severino, who had been optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday.

Severino has had a disappointing sophomore season. He is 1-7 with a 6.52 ERA. In a 7-1 loss at Boston on Tuesday, he allowed five earned runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings.

Entering Friday's game against Tampa Bay, the Yankees are 58-56 and trail the Red Sox by 3 1/2 games for the second wild-card spot in the American League.
