Linden Residents Worry Someone Is Poisoning Cats

LINDEN, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Union County, New Jersey authorities are worried that someone may be poisoning cats, after a Linden resident found one of her pets dead this past weekend.

Laurie Haefner found her cat, Teddy, dead on Saturday. She said Teddy was playful and fine just hours earlier.

Haefner said she is worried there was foul play.

"I am probably the only one that has the nerve to say something to somebody," Haefner said. "You know, he was a little cat, and he was so cute and lovable. It's not fair."

Haefner said she had a second cat that died last November, and the Humane Society said that cat had been poisoned.

Haefner and her family told Linden police they believe someone is soaking cat food in antifreeze and feeding it to stray cats to kill them.

Linden police emphasized that animal cruelty can result in fines ranging from $250 to $1,000 and six months' imprisonment.
