CBS2 Demanding Answers: Why Are Lines So Long At Flatbush Post Office?

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Customers wait for hours every day at the Flatbush Station post office in Brooklyn, and some call it the worst post office in all of New York City.

As CBS2's Ali Bauman reported, customers Monday were demanding answers about the delays.

Things can get heated inside the Church Avenue post office. Patience is tested as customers often wait for more than an hour for a package.

"Everybody's waiting on line just to get their package," a customer said.

One man even brought his own chair for his stay.

"I went for an hour – just stood in for an hour," said Jet Jeudine.

"Most times, maybe an hour plus," said Joy O'Connor.

"I come here to pick up packages and I wait for like two hours just to get a package," said Tirzeh Stashko.

Many customers on Monday turned right around when they saw the wait. Some believe the post office needs more tellers, but complaints to management fall on deaf ears.

When CBS2's Bauman tried talking to a supervisor, the words were harsh.

"If you film it, I will break it," the supervisor said.

The U.S. Postal Service said the reason there is so much foot traffic at the Flatbush post office is because mail carriers cannot deliver packages safely and securely in the neighborhood. But residents said there has to be a better way.

"They don't even bother buzzing," said Richard Range. "I mean, I even have it on my Amazon address -- it says 'buzz,' and then 35, and they don't do it."

"I've been home, and then I just get a slip on the mail on the door," said Linda Saffioti.

Customers say the line has even been affecting their livelihood.

"I'm on lunch," said Dervie Mapp. "I can't afford to stand on line and be late to go back to work."

"They're going to send my package back and you work Monday through Friday – how can you get your mail?" said Sonia Fisher.

The USPS said they are working on forming a package-only line at the Flatbush post office to help move it along. For now, fixing the post office is just a waiting game.

The post office is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, but on Monday, the last customers left around 6 p.m.
