New Jersey Farm Offers Horse Therapy For Sick Children

MAHWAH, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Horseback riding is an activity that requires patience and skill, even for the healthiest and most able bodied.

But it can also be greatly beneficial for some sick children and their families, where it's providing some much needed healing. CBS2's Dr. Max Gomez reported Monday on a special horse farm in New Jersey that is accomplishing that goal.

Kaia Carroll said it has been months since she has really enjoyed herself. The 8-year-old has a rare form of leukemia, and the last year of her life has been a blur of doctors, hospitals and chemotherapy.

"This week, I felt good," Kaia said. "I wasn't really nauseous and I wasn't in any pain, really."

Kaia and 19 other young patients took part in Pony Power Therapy in the Ramapo Mountains in New Jersey. Patients and their families learn to ride and care for horses.

Hackensack University Medical Center sponsors the intensive four-day program.

"Lots of joy on the farm," said Dana Spett of Power Pony Therapies. "There's some exercise. We are getting dirty, so there's just endless opportunities between physical and emotional, recreational, social."

Pediatrician Dr. Stephen Percy of Hackensack University Medical Center said riding also helps build muscle and coordination.

"Particularly with kids who have developmental disabilities and may have issues with walking, to get them on the animals and to be moving in a different way has really helped them," Percy said.

Kaia has also regained something her parents longed to get back.

"This has brought so much happiness to her. She's looked forward to this for so long," said Kaia's mother, Darlene Carroll. "It's just really nice to know these opportunities are there for them to make them feel special.

Despite their size and strength, these therapy horses tend to be very calm. That also makes them good therapy for kids with physical issues -- helping them build strength, balance and coordination.

Studies also show that children who spend time with the therapy horses have lower levels of stress.
