FDNY Adds 17 Names To 9/11 Memorial Wall

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The FDNY on Tuesday added 17 names to its World Trade Center Memorial Wall.

The additions honored members of New York's Bravest who died from illnesses related to the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

As WCBS 880's Stephanie Colombini reported, family and friends wiped tears from their eyes as each of the 17 FDNY members' names were added to the wall at the ceremony in Brooklyn.

Jeff Thompson attended on behalf of his father, Capt. Thomas J. Thompson of Engine Co. 306, whose name was added to the wall.

Capt. Thompson died last year of a severe lung cancer that has been linked to his response efforts after 9/11.

"He was just a regular man that did extraordinary work every single day, and he died for it," Jeff Thompson said.

FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said in addition to the 343 members lost on 9/11, "We continue to lose members every year to WTC Illness - there's now 127 names on that wall."
