Angelina Jolie Files For Divorce From Brad Pitt

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Brangelina is no more. Angelina Jolie Pitt has filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, bringing an end to one of the world's most star-studded, tabloid-generating romances.

An attorney for Jolie Pitt, Robert Offer, said Tuesday that she has filed for the dissolution of the marriage. Offer said the decision was made "for the health of the family.''

"She will not be commenting, and asks that the family be given its  privacy at this time," Offer said.

Pitt released a statement to People magazine.

"I am very saddened by this, but what matters most is the wellbeing of our kids," the statement said.

The couple has six children together: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne.

"Angelina has requested full physical custody – which means all six kids would live with her," said Kevin Frazier of "Entertainment Tonight. "Brad would be allowed visits and sleepovers."

The couple has around $400 million to divide, and there does not appear to be a prenuptial agreement, Frazier reported. Among their assets is a lot of big-money property, including Chateau Miraval, their $60 million estate in the South of France, Frazier reported.

Though together for 12 years, Pitt and Jolie only wed in August 2014. They married privately in the French hamlet of Correns in Provence with their children serving as ring bearers and throwing flower petals. They announced the ceremony days later.

You'd be hard-pressed to find someone who has not heard of the couple. Reaction on the streets of Manhattan to news of the split varied, CBS2's Alice Gainer reported.

"I can't believe that - oh it's heartbreaking," said Gordon Levack of Michigan. "Oh, I'm just devastated."

"I thought, wow there must be some back story there," another passerby said.

"It's real shocking, because they've been together for a long time," another said.

"I couldn't care in the slightest," a fourth said. "It's their life, not mine."

"I'm shocked. But you know the good thing is my wife and I dressed as Brad and Angelina for Halloween two years ago, so now it gives us a good photo to post as throwback Thursday," said Michael Kauffman of Manhattan.

The divorce filing lists Pitt and Jolie separating five days ago.

Jolie is not asking for spousal support.

This is the second marriage for Pitt and the third for Jolie.
