NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Police say a man who goes by the name “Whitey GZ” on social media is being sought in connection to a shooting in the Bronx.
According to the NYPD, the suspect, identified only as “Whitey GZ,” pulled out a handgun and shot the victim in the leg at around 10:45 p.m. in an apartment on Irwin Avenue Wednesday night.
Police say the rapper intended to rob the victim of his cellphone and backpack. When the victim resisted, police say the suspect shot the victim in the right thigh.
According to police, the victim and suspect were at the apartment to shoot a music video. The victim was supposed to star in the video and “Whitey GZ” was supposed to film it.
The victim was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in stable condition. The suspect fled on foot.
“Whitey GZ’s” Twitter handle has not been updated since the incident occurred. The Bronx rapper has three freestyle rap videos on what appears to be his YouTube page — the last one was uploaded on Sept. 20.
Police say the suspect has dreadlocks and several tattoos, including one that says “Almost Impossible” on his left arm and another that reads “Dream For Success” on his right arm.
The NYPD is asking anyone with information about the suspect to contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS or by logging on to their website at www.NYPDcrimestoppers.com.
