NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A 36-year-old man apparently wanted for an assault was shot by police in Brooklyn Tuesday morning.

The NYPD warrants squad was looking for the man and spotted him at around 8:45 a.m. near P.S. 23, CBS2’s Steve Langford reported. When police approached him near Marcy and Vernon Avenues, he started to drive straight toward an officer, police said.

Officers fired a shot through the door of his BMW, striking him in the left arm, police said.

“As one detective approached the front window of the vehicle, the wanted subject, identified as Javon Shipman, a male, 36-years-old, accelerated, and mounted the sidewalk in the direction of the detective,” said NYPD Chief of Patrol Terence Monahan. “His partner, a plain-clothes police officer, fired one round at the subject as he was driving forward.”

Shipman hit a building and then continued driving. He was eventually stopped about 10 blocks away near 322 Tompkins Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant, police said.

It was the end of the line for a suspect wanted on a number of crimes.

Cell phone video near the scene shows officers trying to get Shipman out to surrender.

“We were saying ‘break the glass’ get him out, don’t shoot him you know,” Bobby Lyons recalled.

The encounter recorded by the ubiquitous electronic witness that new captures just about everything of this nature.

“I think they exercised great restraint. This could have been something of a similar situation not too long ago, but the police are getting it,” community activist Tony Herbert said.

The New York State Department of Corrections said Shipman has already served prison time on two robbery convictions. He was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition.

One police officer was also being evaluated at a hospital.

Police said officers discovered drugs in Shipman’s car.

The investigation is ongoing.

P.S. 23 in Brooklyn was placed on a temporary shelter-in due to the incident. The shelter-in was lifted after the NYPD cleared the area, and all students and staff are safe.
